Dallas, Texas
In South Dallas, Texas, where many residents face long distances to access fresh produce, Restorative Farms is working to transform these challenges into solutions by developing a sustainable, community-driven urban farming network. Freddie, a Whole Foods Market Team Member, has been instrumental in supporting this work through the Community First Grant.
Since 2021, Freddie has championed Restorative Farms through five consecutive years of Community First Grant funding, helping secure over $45,000 for the organization's urban farming initiatives. This sustained support has supported Restorative Farms’ overall goal of building a comprehensive network designed to "Grow a Better Dallas."
“The Community First Grant is really special to me. It’s right here in my hometown, where I'm able to explore and help the organizations that we [partner with].”
- Freddie Cavazos
Freddie's advocacy has helped fund several components of Restorative Farm’s work. Most recently, Freddie's support through the Community First Grant is helping launch a vermiculture operation transforming food waste into living fertilizer that will be used across Restorative Farms farms. This program is located at Lawnview Station, a DART transit hub in South Dallas. The farm will be managed by a graduate from Restorative Farms' Future Urban Farmer program, where formerly incarcerated individuals gain professional training and entrepreneurial leadership experience.
With a training and education center preparing the next generation of urban farmers, Lawnview Station is becoming a living classroom, food hub, and replicable model for urban agriculture across Dallas. With Freddie's continued support, Restorative Farms is empowering individuals with the skills they need to break the cycle of poverty while building a healthier, more resilient community.
